Are organic search visitors always seen as organic in origin, even if their return to the site is direct?
-
Many of our conversions occur in a customers second visit to the site. Often, a customer will arrive at our site, submit a finance application, leave, and return at a later date to checkout.
We are interested in tracking how many of our checkouts come from customers who originally found our site through an organic search result.
If a customer enters the site through organic search, leaves, and returns later through an email link or directly entering our URL, will G analytics show that customer as direct or organic origin?
Cheers,
Ben

I think what you're really looking to do is use multi touch funnels and attribution. And the metric you are trying to measure is called "first touch" - meaning the source of the first visit gets the credit.
If your analytics is set up for goals and/or ecommerce tracking which is all pretty easy to do, you can see all of the default multi touch reports in GA.
Here's their intro guide and guide on setting it up.

Yes, according to Google Analytics IQ curriculum (see https://www.google.com/analytics/iq.html, lesson 3 about traffic sources), direct traffic will not override previous campaign sources - at least for conversion attribution.
You could also have a look at the reports "Assisted conversions" + "Top Conversion paths" in the Conversions > Multi-channel Funnels section in Google Analytics to get more information.
Hope this helps!

Yes, GA will treat like this if they don't have active session. If that visitor is working same session then it will not overwrite organic. It will not increase your organic search either. It will only show the increment in your page views.
I don't think there is any service available to track organic traffic over multiple days/sessions.

I've done a little more reading and found that <direct>will never overwrite <organic>(as long as the cookie is active, <6 months) as discussed here: http://www.hmtweb.com/marketing-blog/google-analytics-referring-sources-experiment/</organic></direct>
Correct?
-
Is that only when they do not have an active session? I believe direct will never overwrite organic origin when the session is active?
Are there any services available to track organic traffic over multiple days/sessions?
-
G Anlytics will count them direct visitor and also it will count under returning visitors.

Organic traffic down
My 15 or so clients have all seen a drop in organic traffic by about 20% on GA4 for April. Rankings have not dropped or anything like that - so just wondering if anyone else has had similar?

How do I exclude fake direct load traffic from networks in Google Analytics?
Starting on Friday 1/20, we noticed a huge, unnatural spike in Direct Load traffic. While researching where it was coming from, the big flags were huge spikes in countries that normally only have <5 sessions a month like Russia, Singapore, Brazil, etc., each sending 1400 a week, with >99% bounce rate and <0:00:05 average session duration. While looking into networks, we saw an influx in Networks that had never sent traffic before, each with >1300 sessions a week, 100% bounce rate, and 0:00:00 session duration. The list of these Networks are: astute hosting usa incorporated

Direct Traffic Spike
In February, I transferred an HTML site to a WordPress Platform. Since then, Direct traffic has spiked to nearly 400% since the WordPress transition. The Direct traffic spike took roughly 2 months before it started to kick in. Does anyone know what this could be attributed to?

Homepage on page 2 for site:domain
Hi all, today I noticed that our homepage is located on page 2 if you do the site:domain query. As far as I know, the site:domain results mirror the importance in the eyes of Google. Some time ago, our homepage was the first result. I have to say that we do not often have changing elements or new content on the homepage, it is more like a static page. But still the most linked to page on the domain... What conclusion can I come to? Is our homepage of lower importance to Google than some time ago? Is it a problem for SEO? As we backed down our advertisments, the traffic from branded keywords fell the last months - could this be an explanation? And, most important: do I have to worry? (Besides, the SEO-traffic is fine and growing..)

Ways to analyze a 1M rows dataset of search queries
Hi, I have this large dataset, about 1 million search queries with visits, bounce rate and a few other metrics. I'm trying to explore this data to find keyword "buckets" (such as include product name, location name, transactional objective, informational, etc.), as well as explore the density of certain keywords (keywords as in instances of a single word amongst all queries) My idea was to use Excel and a macro to split all queries in separate words (also clearing punctuation and uppercase/lowercase), then storing this word in a new worksheet, adding to another column the visit counts from the row where the word was extracted (as to give a sense of weight). Before adding the word to the new worksheet, the script will look if the word already existed, if so it would just add the current value of visits to the existing visit counts etc. In the end it will create sort of a "dictionary" of all the keywords in all search queries ranked by weight (= visits from search query including this keyword) This would help me get started I believe, because I can't segment and analyze 1M raw search queries... My issue is: this VBA has been running on my (fast) PC for the last 24hr and it doesn't seem to get to an end. Obviously excel+VBA is not the best way to do text mining and manipulation in such a large dataset (although it's just a 30mb file) What would you do if you had this dataset and would like to mine the text/semantic as I am doing? Any idea of tools? process? I'm considering dumping this data into a MySQL db and doing the processing through PHP (the only backend language I'm versed in), and getting the "summified" data stored into another table, which I'll then be able to export to a Excel for analysis. But I'm afraid that I'll be facing memory limit issues and such... In the meantime, I'm definitely interested into knowing what you guys would do if you had this data and wanted to simply start exploring its constituencies Thanks!

Google encryption of search results
Hello Is there any definitive information on whether the recent changes to the way Google encrypts search results for people logged into Google affects the traffic present via the Google Adwords Keyword tool? Plus, how does SEOmoz ensure/minimise the affect of personalisation/localisation etc. on the rankings data provided via the pro tool. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Kind regards Neil
