Scraper Advice
-
Hi all,
I know we all deal with scraped content issues. I have one I could use advice on. I found a site that is posting our blog content on their site verbatim, including the links I added to the posts (which is good) and mention our blog home page in a right sidebar beside the content (also good). However, they aren't linking to the specific posts from their copied versions anywhere and their pages canonical back to their versions, not mine.
It's not a very spammy site and has a decent domain authority (though significantly lower than our own). I did a long tail search related to one of posts after discovering it, however, and found their version was outranking the original. I know I can report this one via Webmaster Tools.
I wanted to get your opinion on whether asking them to add a link back to the original post on our site might be sufficient, or do I need to ask for that plus a canonical tag update? I know getting both is ideal, but the links and relationship could be valuable, so I want to leave this particular bridge in tact if I can.
Just trying to decide if I take an "either/or" approach to my request when I mention those two action items, or if I need be a little firmer and ask them to do both and potentially risk losing a potential outlet for future content?
Thanks,
Andrew

Don't second-guess on that myth that scrapers can't hurt you. These guys are outranking you right now with your own content. Proof enough to me that Kissmetrics needs to take notice and pull down false information. Also, this is another clear example of Google not knowing how poorly their systsem is working and they know not that they know not.
Google would not be getting millions of DMCAs per week if they were right about this. I've sent them hundreds.

Normally, I'd take that harder approach as well. If this was a spammy site that was doing nothing but scraping, I'd definitely be going that route. I still might. I'm trying to see the best way to walk a fine line.
I think #2 on Kissmetrics' 3 Myths About Duplicate Content has me second-guessing myself. If it wasn't a somewhat decent site that has potential to help in terms of referral traffic, it would be a no-brainer.
For the outranking issue, it's weird. For the main term we target, we are top 3 in the SERPs. Change it a little bit and they're ranking, which is the only instance of that I found when testing all posts (5 total).
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

What you do on your first step will set the tone for how they treat you in the future. So, if you are too liberal now, it will be hard to reign them in and they could start grabbing everything that you own.
If this was my site being grabbed, I would be contacting them to take the content down and be prepared to follow up with an attorney who is already in place for this type of situation, being ready to submit DMCA to Google, Adsense, hosting and more.
If you feel that the relationship could be valuable and have a different philosophy than mine, then I would at minimum insist on the rel=canonical pointing back to the source of the content on my website - and I would require them to ask before they use anything in the future. The fact that they are outranking you with your own content should have you shaking in your boots over this potential relationship. You are making deals with Goliath.

Need Advice on Categorizing Posts, Using Topics, Site Navigation & Structure
Hey there, My site had terrible categorization. I did a redesign, and essentially decided to start over using Topics instead of categories - which appear as my site's main navigation. Now I need to assign a Topic to all my posts. Is it safe to assign posts to multiple parent Topics from an SEO point of view? I want to do it since it would be helpful for users to find them in multiple locations some of the time, but I certainly don't want any SEO issues. Also, should I de-categorize all of my posts since I'm assigning them to my new hierarchical taxonomy - Topics? This is very important to finalize. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Redirects Advice Please
Hi All, I have been approached by someone to look at their website who has seen a rank drop over the last week of around 15 places. On a quick look at their website I have seen what I am imaging could be the culprit as I imagine it will be creating a re-direct loop. However, i am not 100% with these things so would like some others opinions.com They have a wordpress website. There home page lets say https://theirsite.com/ They have an internal page built for a search term https://www.theirsite.com/keyword In wordpress they have set that page in settings to be the homepage. However, I looked on their server and via htaccess they have a 301 redirect from https://www.theirsite.com/keyword to https://www.theirsite.com/ So the questions are: 1. Could this be creating a loop? 2. The redirect was placed around a week before the rank drop. Could this possibly be the cause of the drop? 3. I am assuming that removing the 301 from htaccess is recommended? Thanks in advance for any advice

Help. Recently my organic traffic has dropped 40%. Any advice / ideas?
Lately my organic traffic has dropped significantly as well as my adsense revenue. The moz report says, for example, my traffic is down 40%, but I a still #1 for that keyword. Also, in the last week, suddenly my number of indexed pages doubled. We had done some page rewriting and maybe messed that up. We've fixed that though. Webmaster tools is still picking up all of our old pages and the new ones. Background: We recently launched our new responsive website in March. March income was about the same as February. April dropped off suddenly (maybe late march - no sure) When we changed site, we did do 301's for all the old pages to the new ones Any ideas or advice as to why my traffic and revenue has dropped off so sharply? Never submitted questions before - not sure if I am supposed to put urls here so if you just google Home Spelling Words - that's my website. Thanks everyone!!!

Advice on improving ecommerce product detail pages to rank better in google search results.
Hi all, I run an ecommerce website, not a great ranked site, however i want to try and improve the product detail pages. To do this, i am first going to focus on 1 page (this one: http://goo.gl/eS62SU) If i type the product code directly into google.co.uk search i am on the 8th page (see https://www.google.co.uk/#q=hac-hfw2220r-z&start=70) which is a bit poor to say the least. I see this kind of thing for a lot of my products. Hence, i am going to see if over the next month or two i can get this one page moving up the rankings purely with on page optimisation. I would like to ask a couple of things: 1. Is there anything that jumps out at you as to why that product detail page could NOT ever rank well, i.e some code / set up of page etc that prevents google ranking it 2. Any advice you could give that might improve that page in rankings for its product code. FYI - I can not change the dynamic URL, I only have control over such things as product name / summary / features / spec etc any advice welcome

Manual Actions tab advice on message
Ok so I have this message in manual actions (with no examples of links): Manual Actions
Technical SEO | | pauledwards
Site-wide matches None
Partial matches Some manual actions apply to specific pages, sections, or links
Reason Affects
Unnatural links to your site—impacts links
Google has detected a pattern of unnatural artificial, deceptive, or manipulative links pointing to pages on this site. Some links may be outside of the webmaster’s control, so for this incident we are taking targeted action on the unnatural links instead of on the site’s ranking as a whole. Learn more. I am not surprised by this as an agency a few years ago did mass aritcle submissions for the same anchor text, I have manually removed 119 or so domains in the last year and a half and 4 weeks ago i disavowed the last 40ish domains left. Obviously the back-link profile can be seen to have an unnatural anchor-text distribution still but not as bad. In terms of rankings we lost some core terms on the homepage, not completely but most have gone from say page one to page 2/3/4 etc We are still getting good traffic to internal pages, so i am assuming action was taken to the homepage - where the mass of those links are pointing to. Where do you guys recommend I go from here, shall i go ahead and click the reconsideration request? or wait longer for the disavow. I am still also trying to remove bad links. Any advice much appreciated.0 -

Hi Everyone, New member here, but loving it. I have some questions that I couldn't find the answers to. We are radically changing our site. Over the years it has accumulated thousands of garbage files, WP installations, etc. We enjoy good rankings for lots of our keywords. Are there articles/advice/suggestions on how to do this with the least harm to our rankings? One of the largest concerns is for pages currently ranked and we want to move them to blog posts with a preceding /blog/ in the url. The filename, title, etc. will all remain identical. the url is www.wulongforlife.com Sure appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Keywords and content and seo advice please
Hi i am building a site at the moment which i am working on. please ignore the state of the site as we are just playing with designs at the moment but please do take notice of the top part. The site is a travel magazine but i am a bit concerned. The keywords that we will be looking at to drive travel will be as follows, cheap flights gatwick, holiday magazine and travel magazine. Now i do not want the site to look untidy with loads of content describing the site but at the same time i want google to know what the site is and for people to pick the site up with the search terms that we are aiming for. the site is www.cheapflightsgatwick.com Can anyone please show me some examples of how i should structure the site to attract the keywords and give me some advice. It seems hard when you are designing a magazine site where the content changes all the time to try and attract the search engines with your keywords. any advice would be great
