Quality link building methods??
-
I am getting more and more confused by the messages out there about "post Panda" link building methods.
Apparently Google has devalued many of the old methods such as Article Marketing, Profile Linking, Web 2.0 content etc. But all I hear is that instead of that you must create "quality content" that users want to link to naturally.
But hey.... how do users find your quality content if you don't already rank in the search engines??
Isn't it a bit chicken and egg?
So, if I write what I think is a really good blog post or product page now, I can not really do anything to help it along in getting some decent rankings so that people will actually find the page and maybe link to it??
I also hear that "Social Signals" are becoming more important for rankings. Facebook likes and Google +1's
Can anybody tell me how you encourage people to like and +1 the standard info pages of your website, like "Home Page" or "Service Page"? or is the future of search all about "commentary". Do I need to write a witty interesting blog post that appeals to masses that then links to my service or product page. Do I need to tweet to my non existent followers about a page I cant get ranked in the search engines? or blog "quality content" to no-one because I have no traffic coming to my website??
As you can probably tell, I am very confused with the messages, post panda. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me with the order of the new Search Marketing strategies.
If I write a quality web page, then what? If I don't already have a traffic source either in Social Media or other related web pages, what is the best way to go about gaining rankings and traffic from search?
Thanks

Thanks Greg,
I totally get your point about "Earning" links.
Struggling a bit with the notion that my competitors will give me a quality link in return for content. why would a competitor do this?
I am also struggling with the notion that "The more quality links you get, the higher up in the serps you go. Its that simple."
In my recent experience (post panda), that simply isn't true. I have clients with really good link profiles that totally blow away the competition (according to seomoz site explorer), there on-page SEO scores are all "A" yet they rank below many inferior pages and sites.
I suppose my worry is that so many other factors are coming in to play that I don't understand.
I will keep on "earning" links and see if it has the desired effect.
Thanks again

"what is the best way to go about gaining rankings and traffic from search"
I think it can all be summed up in 2 words.
Outreach and Hussle. Stop thinking about how to "build" links (low value) Rather spend your time and energy "earning" your links.
Create a awesome blog post about your niche, find a competitor or a relevent website and give them the article in return for a link. They get awesome content, and you get a awesome and powerful link!
The more quality links you get, the higher up in the serps you go. Its that simple. (or not)
I would advise you watch more whiteboard Fridays!

Best way to link from press releases
I'm wondering what people recommend for linking from press releases; specifically, what kind of tracking parameters people add to their links, if any. My first thought is to add UTM tracking parameters for Google Analytics, but I have a few concerns: bloggers that copy our link from the release include the tracking parameters in the links from their site, which would only identify the traffic as coming from the release and not the specific sites UTM parameters in the link may make it look less natural to Google Also, I've considered using shortened URL's without parameters in the release that get 301 redirected to the relevant pages, which I thought might have a few benefits: the links look more natural (no tracking parameters) UTM parameters could be added as part of the redirect after the fact if the release attracted links from spammy sources for some reason I could kill the redirect, which I'm hoping would effectively kill the link My company doesn't rely on press releases for link building, which we understand to have been ineffective for a long time, but we do send them out occasionally and want the most effective links for tracking and SEO. I'd love to hear if anyone has thoughts on these assumptions, or if anyone has different linking strategies that they have found strike the right balance of SEO and tracking considerations. Thanks!

Competitor has 50 linking root domains, 2500 facebook likes
Hello, A competitor of ours is ranking way higher than you would expect. They have very few links, half the DA and homepage PA of us, yet they rank several slots higher. On analysis, the only difference seems to be that they have 2500 facebook likes. Did they buy likes? Have you seen anything odd like this before? Thanks.

Social data for links
Hey can anyone recommend a tools out there, which can look at a list of urls (over 20+) and it will show the social stats for each url (e.g. number of Facebook Shares, Tweets, etc)? Or a tool which searchers within a certain category or niche (might be based on the keyword you entered), and finds the most shared content? Cheers, Chris

Do you build tools meant to be shared on Facebook?
I have some neat ideas for calculators and fun tools that I'll implement on one of my sites from time to time. I'm not convinced that I am getting the most SEO value out of them however, and would love to discuss what others do. Let's say I create a calculator that let's someone "cartoon themselves" (fictitious example). So, I'd create the tool and then I would put a button in a prominent place on the page to encourage people to share to FB. I configure my page so that the title and meta description are enticing for others who would see the story in their friend's news feed, so something like: I just cartooned myself on example.com! Upload a photo and see what you look like as a cartoon! You won't believe the results! So, this gets me some traffic, but nothing has gone super viral yet. I have a few pages like this that have garnered a few links, but not nearly as many as I would like. I promote the page on digg and other sites as well but this brings very poor returns. When you make a tool like this, do you do a lot of promotion? Have any tips for me? (btw...it's possible that my tools are just not as "shareable" as I think!)
