Best way to set up a support site - sub domain, separate site or com/support?
-
My company is setting up our support site. It has been suggested that we set it up as a separate domain - www.company-support.com, rather than setting it up as a sub-domain (www.support.company.com) or the usual www.company.com/support. The person who proposed this believes it wlll create link juice, but i wonder if splitting the traffic will create more harm than good? Opinions please!

Hi googilvie
you sound sceptical about this persons' suggestion, and I would be too.
What is the purpose of the support site? That's perhaps a daft question but presumably it's primarily to support customers with the effects of lowering support costs, increasing renewals or repeat sales or whatever? Or is it to add content for SEO purposes.
Either way I wouldn't use a new domain.
For usability I would put the support section on the same domain (in a folder) or a sub-domain
For SEO I would put it on the same domain, both to earn any incoming links for your primary sales domain, and also to avoid a discrete 'support site' outranking the main one on any brand or product name searches.
I can't think of a single brand or company that uses a separate domain for support, which is often a good indicator of whether something is a good idea

Very old site wanting a revamp - how to handle all the redirects/URL changes
Hi all, I have a very very old site, that requires a facelift (going from an old clunky CMS to wordpress). A problem I know I am going to face is that this site has a very poor URL structure (www.site.com/section/1/section/ etc) which I plan on cleaning up. but how do I handle the 100+ backlinks this website has point to such links? If someone could point me in the direction of an article or such that would be great. Thanks,

Owning a ton of domain names
I have a question really a matter of opinion for those other SEO's and marketers out there. One of the companies I work for has a ton of domains, just about every variant and international version of its domain name. Do you think there is real value to owning something like .mobi? It's not a mis-spelling variant and as I understand it the forwarded domain means nothing to Google. It's also not much used, so what is the point of spending thousands of dollars to own all these variations?

How can I tell if a site is trustworthy and is not / hasn't been penalized by Google?
Hello Moz Community, I'm looking to do some link building for a client and I would like to know if there's a way to find out if a website is trustworthy and is not or hasn't been penalised by Google. Thank you.

I have created 5 model specific blog sites which deliver links to my core site.
I post about 500 words of unique relevant content weekly to each model blog site. Each week, seo smartlinks delivers keyword anchor text links to my core site with a 3% keyword density. I have been doing this for 3 months and my core site traffic is stagnant or slightly down. Is this a good practice since its relevant content, or am I writing for nothing? Also, am I in danger of over optimized anchor text?

Following Penguin, what is the best practice for a web design agency placing a footer link in client sites?
For years we have included a 'Web Design by ...' link in the footer of all client websites designed by us. However, following the Penguin update, it seems that this legitimate practice could now be penalised. Should we be removing those links from our client's sites? There are tens of thousands, all with similar or identical text! For future client sites, should we avoid these footer links altogether? Or maybe limit the link to a single page on each site?

SEOs and web developers frequently leave links to their site in the footer of their clients' sites. Does this negatively impact the site with the links?
Does this provide any SEO value to the receiving site? Has anyone experienced problems doing this?
